Averi's Shiner

We had quite the scare on Thanksgiving night.  Because Averi missed her nap during the afternoon with our guests joining us for Thanksgiving dinner, I wanted to get her in bed early.  Everything was going great until I called Averi to come over to me so that I could read her some books before bed.  She obediently began running to me (she doesn't seem to know how to walk, only run), but she tripped and fell and hit her eye on the bottom rung of the rocking chair where I was sitting.  Immediately, the area around Averi's right eye was very swollen and there was a lump that turned purple.  Of course, Averi was crying and screaming and Jeff and I were quite unnerved because of how bad her eye looked.  We decided to go to the children's urgent care that was a few minutes from our house to get it checked out.  Unfortunately, the urgent care was closed because of the holiday, so on to Children's Hospital we went.  After four hours of chasing Averi around the ER and keeping her from climbing/swinging from the stretcher and watching her "charm" the nurses, we were pretty sure Averi was fine.  Thankfully, the doctor confirmed what we suspected and said that Averi would have a shiner for a couple of weeks, but other than that, she was fine.  Of course, after watching Averi not be still one moment while the doctor was in the room including trying to swing from the stretcher, the doctor also predicted that Averi would be the type of child who by the time she was six would have several more shiners, at least one broken arm, and need stitches at least once.  Not good news for this parent whose heart was still pounding from this traumatic experience.  Of course the good news is that at least we know we have a wonderful children's hospital nearby for whenever the next major injury occurs.
