Averi has a yellow shirt that says "One Smart Cookie" on the front. She is obviously trying to live up to the name! Recently, I was letting her pick out her shirt and she was pointing to each one, but then would shake her head no. Then she pointed to the yellow shirt and I said, "Do you want to wear your yellow shirt?" and she signed "cookie" and said "Da" (which means yes). She hadn't worn this shirt in several weeks and I was astounded that she remembered that the yellow shirt said "one smart cookie" on it. Almost daily since that day, she has asked for that shirt by signing "cookie" whenever it is time for her to choose a shirt.
Two other examples that she is "one smart cookie" came from our reading Dr. Seuss' ABC book. Averi loves this book so we have read it many times! However, I was still very surprised when one day, as Grammy was reading her the book and got to the next to last page where the entire alphabet is listed except for Z, and Grammy said all the letters through "y" and before she could turn the page, Averi piped up with an enthusiastic "Z". Averi also amazed us another way. The word "BIG" was written in a larger font and so for several days, Averi pointed to each letter in the word BIG on every page. For each letter, we had begun to say "B is for Ba (Grandma)" "I is for ice", and "G is for girl". We didn't realize that she was really making the connections to the letters and the words we said until one morning, she came running to Daddy from the kitchen carrying a magnetic letter B, held it up to him and excitedly shouted "Ba! Ba! Ba!"
We can't wait to see what our "one smart cookie" will come up with next!
